Women 4th, Men 7th at Sun Belt Championships
Nov. 1, 2009
MONROE, LA - The Florida Atlantic University cross country team had a good showing at the Sun Belt Championships over the weekend. Muddy conditions on the course slowed the competitors down considerably. The men's team matched its 7th place finish from last season's meet, which is the best finish since joining the Sun Belt. Stephen Dassin was the high finisher for the men, placing 17th in the 8K in a time of 28:26.06. Dassin's 17th place is the best male finisher since moving from the Atlantic Sun conference. Trey Andrews (29:07.55) finished in 26th place. Jordan Dopkins (30:00.90/43rd), Ryan Davis (30:08.12/45th) also ran well for the Owls, despite both runners losing a shoe during a race. Josh Wolfe (30:21:83/53rd) rounded out the scoring for the men. Feil placed 6th in the women's 5K in 20:27.24, which gives her all-conference honors for the third time. It is the best ever individual finish by an FAU runner at conference championships. Lisa Leutner was the next highest finisher for the Owls, placing 12th in 21:19.32, and was the second best finisher among freshman at the meet. Toni Jackson ran a 21:50.49 to place 19th, giving the Owls three top-20 finishers. Megan Bary (22:26.13/29th) and Charlene Luxama (22:40.89/36th) finished the scoring field for FAU.
"The conditions on the course really slowed us down and I feel we would have done even better if it hadn't been quite so sloppy,: said head cross country coach Alex Smolka.
