Owls Win Nova Southeastern Invitational
Sept. 2, 2006
Sunrise, FL -- Freshman Friederike Feil won in her first collegiate race to lead the Florida Atlantic University women's cross country team to a team victory at the Nova Southeastern Invitational held in Markhan Park in Sunrise, FL on Saturday. Feil completed the course in 19:09 to lead the Owls while Trisha Doyle was not far behind in second at 19:12. The duo combined to help FAU edge out Florida International by one point atop the team standings (35-36). "Friederike won her first race, Trisha ran well, and we had an excellent showing up and down the roster," head coach Alex Smolka said. "This will be a great building block for the team." Monika Grabowiecka also ran well in her first race of the year, finishing in sixth place with a time of 20:53. Ashley Wilcox (21:31, 12th) and Barbara Fronrath (21:33, 14th) rounded out the scoring for FAU. Jillian Lopez made her Owl debut, finishing 26th (22:43) and sophomore Christina Gazzia finished 43rd (23:13). FAU was able to pick up a victory despite a rash of injuries in the days leading up to the race. Linn Modin and Artemis Saridakis would start the race but would not finish it. The men's team did not score in the race because FAU had only four runners competing. Stephen Dassin finished 17th in 17:51 to lead the Owls. Dassin along with Jordan Zwick competed in their first collegiate race, with Zwick finishing second on the team to Dassin with a time of 17:53 earning him 21st place. "It was a very good first race for Jordan and Stephen. We can use this meet to build our confidence for the future," Smolka said.
