Men's Cross Country Inks State Qualifier

Nov. 21, 2001

BCCA RATON - Mathew Mazzola has signed a National Letter of Intent to run cross country at Florida Atlantic University, announced first year head coach Alex Smolka.

"Mathew's times will certainly be competitive," says Smolka. "His credentials and area reputation lends credibility to the FAU program."

Mazzola will join FAU's team in the Fall of 2002 as a true freshman. The Jupiter High School senior has personal records of 1:25 in the ½ Marathon, 15:54 in the thee mile cross country event, 10:01 in the two mile track, 4:35 in track's one mile and 2:02 in 800 meters.

While the required distance will increase at the collegiate level, the honor student has shown discipline and improvement each of his four varsity seasons. As a high school runner, he earned first team all-conference and all-county in both track and cross country. Mazzola was the conference champion in 1998 and was a District Runner-up as well as a Regional and a State Qualifier from 1998-2001.
