Men's and Women's Cross-Country Takes Third

Sept. 11, 2004

Miami, FL - Florida Atlantic University's cross-country season got under way Saturday morning as both the men's and women's team finished third at the Florida International Invitational at Tropical Park. Newcomers Linn Modin and Nick Jarriel paced their respective teams by finishing seventh and 15th individually.

"For as many new faces we have on our team this year, I think we did very well in our first race of the season," said head coach Alex Smolka. "This is a potentially great team that had a solid beginning."

The women's team saw 10 runners compete in the two-mile race. Modin, a sophomore from Borgholm, Sweden, finished her first race as an Owl in 12:01. Veteran Artemis Saridakis finished 11th with a time of 12:29. Freshman sisters Allison and Ashley Wilcox finished with times of 12:30 and 12:52 to finish 12th and 15th, respectively. Christina Dutko, 12:58, Antoinette Foster, 13:05, Lauren Moxey, 13:19, Erin Mayros, 13:41, Barbara Fronrath, 14:15, and Laura Hayden, 14:54, also competed.

The men's team saw five new faces, four freshmen and a senior, run in its first event, led by Jarriel. The freshman from West Palm Beach, FL, ran the 5k race in a time of 17:13. Not far off was Earl Barlow who finished in 17:27. Jon DelCegno, 18:22, Will Jennings, 18:55, and Daniel Githens, 18:59, also competed for the Owls.

FAU competes next on Saturday, September 18 at the Gator Invitational in Gainesville.
