Track Team Hosts First Home Meet
March 16, 2008
BOCA RATON, FL - The Florida Atlantic track team hosted a track meet for the first time ever on Saturday. "It was a great meet, and we hope to build on it," said head coach Alex Smolka. The meet brought six teams from around the state to FAU's track and field facility, which opened last January. The women's team won four events at the meet, including Patricia Gumbs' victory in the 800 meters and Lindsay Glover's first place finish in the 400 meter hurdles. Brandi Prather narrowly missed an automatic NCAA qualifying time in the 400 meter dash, finishing in 54.91 seconds. Prather was one of four Owls to set a personal record in that event. She was joined by Toyria Mattear (55.67), Brittany Vollmer (57.49) and Lindsay Glover (58.53). Former Owls sprinter Yanique Booth ran a 11.49 in the 100 meter dash, which is one of the best times in the world so far this season. The Owls swept both the 4x100 and 4x400 meter relays. "We ran very well and it looks like the momentum we built during the indoor season is going to carry over to the outdoor season," said Smolka.
Stephen Dassin finished 2nd in the 1500 meters and David Rundio finished 8th in the 800 meters for the men.
The Owls will next travel to Miami to compete in the Hurricane Invitational on Saturday March 22. |
