Orlando, FL. - The 2003 outdoor track season began for Florida Atlantic University as the Owls took part in the UCF Invitational Saturday afternoon. 15 participants finished in the top five with four school records falling in the process. Junior Claudia Beitel placed first in two events while Raynell Hagberg took first in another.

Beitel broke the school record in the 1500m with a time of 4:38.81 to place first with freshman Kathryn Murnane running a time of 4:53.99 to place third. Beitel followed up that performance with a first place time in the 3000m of 10:22.02 with Murnane finishing third with a time of 11:02.41.

Hagberg, a three time Atlantic Sun Runner-of-the-Week, broke the school record for the 800m with a time of 2:15.53 to finish in first place. Antoinette Foster set a personal record in the 800m with a time of 2:34.80.

The freshman trio of Malika Clary, Marilyn Stephens and Shanna Williams took over the 200m with all three finishing in the top 10. Clary ran a time of 24.60 to finish third overall while Stephens (25.29) and Williams (26.51) finished fifth and 10th respectively.

Marcia Laws and Helenor Wilson finished in the top five in the 400m dash as Laws beat Wilson by a hair with a time of 58.03 compared to 58.07. The duo finished third and fourth overall.

The Owls relay teams did well with the 4x400m team of Cindy Lane, Wilson, Laws and Clary setting the school record with a time of 3:51.84 en route to a first place finish. The 4x100m team also set a school record with a time of 46.35 for a second place finish.

Ashley Stough and Nina Panebianco fought hard battles in the throwing competitions with Stough finishing second in the hammer and discus throw and Panebianco finishing fifth in the Javelin.

Six men participated in the meet with Greg Burke leading the way. Burke finished third in the 800m with a time of 2:01.11 and sixth in the 1500m with a time of 4:14.05.
