Coach Eckelkamp Responds

Feb. 18, 2004

Question from Justin Dirico: How do our facilities compare with other DI schools? Will the Sun Belt help the program?

A: It is always hard to compare facilities! For instance inside versus outside, the requirements are very different. However in my biased opinion considering our location and pool we would be a top-20 facility in the country.

The Sun Belt will be a great addition to the history of swimming and diving. The commissioner and athletic director are currently considering a proposal to add men's for the first time in Sun Belt history and it would be a combined men's and women's championship.

Having been an independent team it will be great to represent FAU in a conference!

Question from Jesse Blake: Do we need better facilities in order to attract better recruits? Where do you see the program in five years?

A: We have great facilities and combined with our location we are the envy of most Division I programs. We do however, need some renovations/improvements such as permanent bulkhead, lighting and a PA system. These would facilitate the hosting of major meets and draw more people to the facility. Permanent shade and seating would also add to the facilities ability to host "big" meets.

Question from Mark Campbell: I noticed you have a technique swim camp for swimmers to age of 17. I'm 18 years old and really could use some technique work. Can age be waived for someone to attend your camp?

A: Yes, Age guidelines are just that, guidelines. We have had campers younger and older join us. We also offer master's technique camps periodically throughout the year. These are designed for adults wanting to get technique help or the tri-athlete wanting to improve his/her swimming leg of the triathlon.
