Swimmers Open Minnesota Invitational with Great Times

After the first day of competition at the Minnesota Invitational, Florida Atlantic University's swim teams stand in third and fifth place in the 10-team fields. The women's team had four top-10 finish to complete the day in third, while the men team had four relays and four individuals post top-10 finishes to rank fifth.

The Lady Owls broke the FAU 400-medley relay record set last season at the NIC Championships with a time of 3:49.53. Kelly Pancake, Ellie Weberg, Emma Petersson and Lisa Andersson teamed for a fourth place finish.

Petersson and Andersson returned to the pool for the 200 free relay with Valeria Dalmastro and Boguslawa Bedyk to place fourth and come within .21 seconds of breaking the school record set in 2003 after touching the wall in 1:34.75. Andersson, Dalmastro and Bedyk were all members of the team that set the mark at last season's NIC Championships.
 

 

Individuals earning top-10 finishes were freshman Geni Burts in the 500 free (5:03.87) with an eighth place finish. Emma Petersson finished sixth in the 200 IM (2:06.58) and Valeria Dalmastro in the 50 freestyle with a fifth place finish (23.81).

Senior Travis Howard picked up a fifth place finish for the men in the 200 IM (1:55.10) while three Owls finished in the top-10 in the 50 free. Pavel Babaev led the way with a time of 21.24 (7th) and Rich Marzonie and Kenny Anderson followed with times of 21.30 and 21.37, respectively

In the 200 free relay and 400 medley relay the men picked up 52 points with fifth place finishes in both events. Babaev, Russell Watkins, Anderson and Marzonie completed the 200 free relay in 1:24.13. Marzonie, Howard, Anderson and Babaev finished the 400-medley relay in 3:24.75.
