Minnesota Edges Out Women's Swimming

Nov. 2, 2002

Final Stats

Florida Atlantic University picked up eight first place finishes against a fast University of Minnesota squad Saturday afternoon at FAU Pool. The Lady Owls fell just 17 points shy of the Golden Gophers in the meet, 157-140.

FAU took six of the first nine events as they looked to control the meet but Minnesota gained ground in the 400 IM after taking the first three spots. FAU took an event of its own, the 100-yard backstroke, as Mary Milburn (1:00.17), Taryn Cokayne (1:00.23) and Kelly Pancake (1:00.63) touched the wall ahead of the Gophers. Milburn and Cokayne recorded season-best times in the event.

Four other Lady Owls touched the wall in season-best times to win their events. Andrea Van Der Plaats continues to dominate the distance events as she took the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:27.24 and improved her previous best by four seconds. Captain Emma Petersson won the 200 fly in 2:05.87. Underclassmen Valeria Dalmastro and Taryn Cokayne each won their events, the 50 free (24.68) and 200 back (2:06.75) respectively.

With a month off to train for the Georgia Invitational, the Lady Owls hope to have a strong showing at the meet on December 6-8 in Athens, GA.
