Swimming Opens Season with Florida

Florida Atlantic University opened up its swimming and diving season on Friday afternoon as the Owls hosted the University of Florida. The Gators came away with victories on both the men's and women's sides.

Sophomore Geni Burts (Pembroke Pines, FL) swam well for the women as she came away with three top-four finishes. She picked up a second place finish in the 400 IM (4:26.26), finished third in the 200 fly with a time of 2:05.09 and touched the wall in 2:08.45 in the 200 back for a fourth place finish.

Two freshmen, Shawna Griffith (Atlanta, GA) and Jessica Lampkin (New Port Richey, FL), had excellent college debuts. Griffith placed third in the 1000 free with a time of 10:30.07 while Lampkin sprinted for a third place finish in the 50 free (25.00) and fourth place in the 100 free with a time of 55.36.
 

 

Diving made a return to the FAU pool after an absence last season. Samantha Schlachterman (Cherry Hill, NJ) led the women with a second place showing on the one-meter board and finished third on the three-meter board.

On the men's side, Nick McMahon (Cincinnati, OH) finished third on both the one and three-meter boards.

Junior captain Kenny Anderson (Jacksonville, FL) led the men with a second place showing in the 100 fly (51.46).

In the 100 free, the Owls took third and fourth place as freshmen Matt Brody and Eric Hilgenfedlt touched the wall in 46.83 and 48.50, respectively.

To round out the sprint events, Eric Onurlu took third in the 50 free in a time of (21.84).

The teams will take next weekend off before hosting Sun Belt Conference opponents Western Kentucky and Florida International at FAU Pool on October 23 at 11 am.
