March 4, 2008 BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University's women's teams recently focused on cancer awareness and wore pink to support the fight against the deadly disease. "The teams were successful in raising both awareness and money for cancer research," said Dexter LaMont, FAU's assistant athletic director for marketing and licensing. "Many of our young ladies have been affected in some way by cancer. Events like these are ways that our teams can give back to the community in the form of money for research, and hopefully they will also help to educate our student-athletes with an eye toward prevention." FAU's softball team played host to its second annual "Strike Out Cancer Tournament" that took place February 15-17. Pledge cards were made available to fans who wanted to donate according to the number of strikeouts their favorite team recorded. The FAU team also designed their own pink shirts and wore pink socks to promote awareness. The women's basketball team also wore pink for the same cause and correlated it with "National Girls in Sport Day," where fans were treated to a pregame festive atmosphere and post-game clinics. While it wasn't the first time either team has hosted the event, it was the first time that opponents also wore pink uniforms, as well as shoe laces. |
